Thailand - The Golden Land

Thailand is often described as the 'Golden land' and no clearer is this depicted than in its hundreds of idyllic islands. South of Bangkok on the Kra Isthmus peninsula dotted between the Gulf of Thailand on one side and the Andaman Sea on the other, tourists are spoilt for choice. Thailand's islands are the prime reason it has such a strong tourism sector. Tropical Islands with clean white sand beaches, lapping warm waters, coconut trees and amazing scenery, the hundreds of thousands of visitors that come here each year can't be wrong. The Tsunami was devastating to some parts of Thailand's islands, such as Phi Phi, Phuket and Samui but the Thai people are resilient and have rebuilt the islands that were affected in this tragic event we all remember.

The islands known to the tourist, such as Samui, Phi Phi and the most known Phuket are a clear example of the diversity of the islands, their character defined by the tourists they attract. The diver loves Ko Tao, an up and coming island only a couple of hours north of Samui. Phuket is a loud island, accessible in that it has its own airport and has a wide range of accommodation needs. It has an abundance of bars, clubs and many of a seedy nature as does Pattaya. It is a great jump off point to the Similian islands for some world-class diving.

Samui, located on the east coast Gulf of Thailand is a clear example of how quickly Thai tourism develops as once a backpacker haven it now has its own international airport and is awry with world-class accommodation and facilities. It's a mesh between the busy Pattaya and the backpacker's Koh Phangan Island where the full moon parties of yesteryear are famed, having busy beaches such as Chaweng and Lami to quieter Bophut and Buddha beaches catering to every type of traveller.

The Phi Phi islands are famed from the appearance in the Movie 'the beach' and while some parts were affected in the tsunami, they offer an amazing destination experience for their raw beauty which never can be taken away. Racha Islands are popular with divers and day trippers as is the Coral Islands. Head to Ko Lanta for some Rest and relaxation, located between the gorgeous Krabi province and Phuket Island. So whether you head to Koh Chang, the newest popular Thai island destination due to its proximity to Bangkok or you fancy the popular young Thai destination hotspot of Koh Samet you'll have a fantastic time.

Thailand's islands offer something for everyone and every taste from Holistic sanctuary to eco-lodges, basic hut to 5 star all inclusive hotels. The islands landscapes are equally diverse, with many island interiors allowing great day trips on your mopeds to explore hiking trails and waterfalls. By night sip a drink in your hammock watching the red roaring sunsets, by day float in the calm warm waters. While Thailand is a safe friendly destination to visit is does have many large protests between military and opposing factions in the public realm so keep current on affairs in Thailand before going.

Koh Samui Thailand - Travel Destination

Koh Samui is easily reached from Bangkok, Thailand's main transport hub, by plane or bus / ferry combination. Other domestic destinations and even Malaysia can be reached from here as well. Should you travel by land, Surat thani Town, Don Sak or Chumporn are the ferry ports to reach the island.

Even due to all the development going on in recent years, the island still has its green stretches and also exports around seventy tons of coconuts per month, mostly to Bangkok.

Having started off as backpacker destination in the early 80's, Samui offers now something for everybody. From a beach bungalow to a high tech villa. A speed garage spring break in stylish bars and venues, one made completely from ice, or a chilled family holiday with some yoga recreation. The size of Samui, and its countless bays make it possible.

Or you are even thinking about renting a house. Should you stay more than one month it can save you a great deal of money. You can rent any style of house between 80 $ and 8000 $ a month. Most of them will have air conditioning included and feature some furniture or a kitchen. Huge Retailers like Makro(TM), BigC(TM) or TESCO(TM) make your daily shopping easier.

Getting around is easy as regular bus and taxi services connect all major towns and beaches. Private air conditioned and metered taxis can be hired for a slightly higher share. For single travelers a motorbike taxi will be the cheapest way to get around.

Samui offers a lot of spare time activities. Mountain trails, waterfalls or tours to the Ang Thong National Marine Park for the nature lovers. Golf & Shooting Ranches, Water parks and Go karts for the holiday junkie. And Fine Dining Restaurants, Tennis Tournaments and sailing cruises for high flyers. A lot of western managed diving schools will happily take care of your water sports needs. And a trip around the island may discover some fun activities such as football golf or guppy fishing. There is plenty to do for everybody.

Speedboat transfers to the world famous Full Moon Party on the sister island of Koh Phangan are easily available at every travel agency.

Please note that Koh Samui is part of the Surt thani province. One of fifteen provinces in Thailand where the wearing of a helmet whilst operating a motorcycle is required. The legal fine for offenders varies between 300 and 500 Thai Baht (7-12$). If you never have driven a motorcycle before, then Koh Samui is not the place to learn it.

Have a nice holiday and enjoy the land of smile.

What Are the Best Places to Visit in Thailand?

Thailand is a fantastic country, full of mystery, intrigue, excitement and joy. Two years ago I decided to travel there with 3 other friends and almost no idea of what to expect. I literally just said "yes" to them when they asked me if I wanted to go, and really had no clue what their culture or country was like at all. That being said, I think that going there was the best thing that I ever did, and I'm so glad that I decided to go, as the people that I went with are brothers for life and the experiences we had out there were legendary.

So what made it so good? There is a place in Northern Thailand called Chiang Mai where I went bungee jumping as well as going on a 3 day trek into the foothills of the north. After that we headed south to the party island of Ko Phangan. This place is now famous for the legendary 'Full Moon Party' that they host every month. The party takes place on a beach with different DJs all the way along and goes on from 9pm till 9am the next day.

Towards the end of our stay we visited a place just east of Bangkok called Kanchanaburi. This place is home to the infamous 'death railway' and the bridge over the river Kwai (which has a film based on it). The place is a chilling reminder of the horrors of war, and there were many memorials and graveyards commemorating those who tragically gave their lives. Though the experience was a little depressing, it made me appreciate what I have now more, and ultimately I'm glad I went there.

Explore Koh Samui's Hot Spots

Chaweng has plenty of its own resorts and places to stay and is the main area in Samui to enjoy the islands nightlife, but it also attracts those from quieter areas who taxi in for the lights and action. Restaurants and bars situated right on the beach provide the perfect place to chill out, get there for sunset and be mesmerized by the colours and beautiful view. The beach is always a great place when you're on holiday as it sets the atmosphere for romance and fun.

Chaweng has its fair share of sophisticated cocktail bars, girly bars and clubs too and many of these can be found on the road that runs parallel with the beach. The main nightlife area centers around Soi Green Mango and draws the party animals looking for excitement and other like-minded tourists who like to drink and have a good time. Dance bars line the street competing with each other in music volume and girls from gogo bars will entice you in to drink with them - once you are in the area then it's easy enough to walk from one place to another as the bars are so close to each other.

The Green Mango club is located in a massive warehouse and split into 2 sections, one plays hip hop and pop, whilst the other has house and techno for hardcore dancers. Sweet Soul Café is popular with the locals and tourists and one of the liveliest with a range of pop music, dance, R n' B, and hip hop tunes - go there to dance not to relax. Bar Solo has a calm, stylish ambiance to it and plays some great tunes with DJ's playing house and lounge music.

The perfect oudoor dance venue is Sound which plays hip-hop and R n' B to the crowds and high-energy housetracks. Between the 2 dance floors is a swimming pool that provides the scene for late at night water action. Whilst if it's live music you are searching for then head down to the lake where the Reggae Pub has been a feature for years. It's got a dance floor and also has international DJ's and live bands throughout the night.

Bar Ice is a bit further out of town on the northern road and a strange place to find on a tropical island as everything, from the walls, bar, sculptures and seats are totally made from Canadian ice. Don't panic though, as they won't melt. Come and see the elephant and tuk tuk sculptures for a truly unique experience. Samui Koh Phangan bars and clubs are fun filled and exciting places to discover when you holiday here.

Christy's Cabaret is Samui's leading ladyboy entertainment spot, and if you are on holiday and new to the idea of ladyboys then it's worth a look at least. It can be great fun as the show features women who are actually men miming to well-known show tunes and dressed up to the nines in wigs, spangles and baubles whilst performing intricate dance routines.

Bars and clubs are bound by law to close at 2 which may seem a little early for some revelers, however, there are some that do stay open until the early hours and if you are up for it just ask around and you'll soon find out which they are. Check out Samui travel online for more information on other bars and venues all over the island.

Don't worry that Chaweng is only for youngsters wanting to get drunk. Thais are very child-friendly and there are lots of places to accommodate those with a young family. People watching is fun here and if you are up for a fun night out then Chaweng Samui is the place to visit.

Chaloklum Fishing Village: An Excellent Alternative to the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan

Perhaps to its detriment, the island of Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand has become infamous for the Full Moon parties that rage monthly through the town of Haadrin. International media coverage and even local perception in neighboring provinces is often unfavorable. I often find, that, when Koh Phangan comes up in conversation, Thais and tourists alike raise their eyebrows slightly, give a knowing smirk, and make a dismissive remark about the island as if crazed partying were all Koh Phangan had to offer.

The reality could not be farther from the truth. While the entire island does see an influx of tourists during the full moon, only the the strip between Thongsala and Haadrin truly comes close to living up to the island's party reputation. And that only happens for a few days on either side of the Full Moon Party.

If you really are put off by the notion of the Full Moon Party though, there is an excellent alternative. Located on the Northern side of the Koh Phangan, as far away as you can possibly get from Haadrin by road (or by boat for that matter), is Chaloklum Fishing Village, or Baan Chaloklum, as it is known locally. Chaloklum and Haadrin could not be more different, despite the fact that they both occupy the same 168 square kilometer slab of rock in the Gulf of Thailand. Where Haadrin seems overrun with sun-kissed and alcohol-crazed, gap-year backpackers on a tear, Chaloklum is a laid-back fishing community which has managed to retain its Thai charm while providing a high level of services, activities and amenities for tourists, travelers and long-stay residents.

Chaloklum Village is composed of a 1.5 kilometre strip of low-level traditional Thai shop houses, small restaurants, bars, cafes and shops that line Chaloklum Bay. Just as the village has retained its traditional architecture, the traditional way of life has continued in this active fishing community. Squid boats ply the harbour, fish can be found drying in the sun on racks along the beach, children attend the local school, and the temple is still the center of village life.

It is a haven for family businesses and a sanctuary from the madness that seems to be slowly overtaking the rest of the island. Absent are the beer bars that line the road between Thongsala and Haadrin on the South coast. Instead, one business in Chaloklum hosts a weekly children's day and musical jam session, providing arts and craft and activities for visiting and local kids, while the adults listen to spontaneous live music into the evening.

Ironically, Chaloklum is becoming increasingly popular with the people who helped make Haadrin what it is today. Travelers who first partied at Full Moon on Haadrin beach fifteen years ago return to Koh Phangan again and again, they just have different priorities, and, more often than not, children. Chaloklum has evolved meet those needs.

Many of these returning travelers have become long-term residents of Koh Phangan and have settled into the increasing number of private houses that surround Chaloklum. With the availability of broadband internet and an ever improving communications infrastructure, Chaloklum has become home to a growing community of writers, artists and others who work from home using the internet to keep in touch.

The village also hosts a growing dive community. Because of its location on the Northern side of Koh Phangan, and its large government pier, Chaloklum is the ideal departure point for dive trips to some of the best sites in the Gulf of Thailand. The abundance of decently priced accommodation, five-star dive instruction and a raft of excellent restaurants, pubs and services make Chaloklum an excellent place to complete an extended dive certification or just enjoy fun dives in Thailand's warm waters. If diving is not your thing, the snorkeling at Koh Ma is hard to beat.

For the sports junkie Chaloklum provides plenty of options. Depending on the season both kite surfing and wakeboarding are available. The mountains that surround the village also make it a great place to go mountain biking. For those who prefer to be on foot, an endless amount of mountain and jungle trails will satisfy even the most avid hiker or adventurous jogger.

If it is relaxation you are after, swimming, sunbathing or just relaxing at a beach bar with a beer or fruit shake in your hand, Chaloklum is a stone's throw away from some of the best beaches on the island. Haad Salad, Haad Khom, and Mae Haad are all minutes away by motorbike car or taxi. Haad Yao and Haad Chao Prao are just a little further along the coast. For the ambitious explorer, long tail boats leave regularly from Chaloklum for the otherwise inaccessible Bottle Beach or even Thong Nai Pan.

As a holiday destination Chaloklum is ideal for families, couples or singles alike. To be fair though, be it in Haadrin, or Chaloklum, or all points in between, all of Koh Phangan offers something for everyone, whether you intend to stay for a week or for a year. The island offers a variety of experiences for all ages and for all budgets. Don't be mislead by what you might have heard. Come see for yourself.

Backpacking in Thailand - 5 Must See Destinations

Thailand is a renowned backpacker destination and has seen travellers coming through the gates for many years. Its appeal is in its fantastic variety as well as its exotic feel which provides a real escape for Westerners. The problem is in trying to decide where to go in the time you have there as there are so many wonderful places on offer. I've tried to make this decision easier for you by listing my 5 favourite spots that you can't miss if you're heading to Thai shores:

1. Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is the place most people are aware of when they head over due to it being the host of the 'Full Moon Party'. Hundreds of thousands of backpackers flock there every year to drink Sam Son and paint themselves in fluorescent pen. It truly is a memorable experience - just make sure you don't enjoy it too much!

2. Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is a great place to escape from the island hopping lifestyle and hoards of foreigners and sample some authentic Thai lifestyle. Obviously there are still plenty of travellers to be seen but you'll also bump into a Buddhist monk and a woman on the street who will cook you some of the best food you've ever eaten in 2 minutes. There's also an array of treks out into the jungle using Chiang Mai as a jump off point where you can see elephants, ride bamboo rafts and much more.

3. Khao Sok National Park
This stunning national park offers another excellent retreat from the hectic parties and beach goers with a seemingly never ending supply of breathtaking walks leading to deserted lakes underneath cascading waterfalls. If you're lucky you'll spot some of the wildlife that lurks in the shadows as well from elephants to leopards.

4.Bangkok
You can't miss Bangkok on a trip to Thailand. This sprawling urban mass is an assault on the senses and will wear you out in no time, but it is a totally unique experience that will leave you stunned. From the tours of golden palaces to the offers from Thai 'girls' on every corner it is a world away from home. Get yourself a new suit, chomp on some Pad Thai and then get out before it's too late!

5.Kho Phi Phi
Phi Phi has long been the jewel in Thailand's crown ever since it featured in The Beach and it certainly lives up to the hype. Whilst it is steadily getting overrun by travellers there is still nothing more refreshing than dipping your toes in the crystal clear waters that are surrounded by huge, green rocks towering over you and providing the frame for this beautiful picture. Make sure this is near the top of your itinerary but be careful, you might end up not seeing anywhere else.

Full Mooon Party in Koh Phangan, Tips For Staying Safe

The greatest beach party on earth. This is the only way to describe the infamous full moon party in Koh Phangan, you'll struggle to find anywhere else in the world that has such a concentrated mass of party goers and fun lovers. Situated on the white sands of Hat Rin beach, the party takes place every month, but its most popular 2 events are at the end of July and on new years eve. Here's a little about that party and a few tips to stay safe.

Originally the party was a small gathering of backpackers but now attracts 10,000 - 30,000 people each month. The beach is full of bars that blast out the latest dance, drum and bass, electro and dustep music, headlined by some of the worlds top DJs.

Don't for one second think that thailand is lenient on recreational drug use, as those days are long gone. It's common for secret police to be patrolling known drug exchange areas and the penalty for being caught out is very harsh. It simply isn't worth the risk of ruining your holiday/travels.

Most people stay either in Koh Phangan in some of the cheaper accommodation available or on its sister island Koh Samui. A speed boat ferry return ticket can be purchased in advance from Koh Samui and ensures your safe return the next morning. The party usually goes on till around 11am, but the main entertainment is at around 2am where fire swings and rings become available for the brave. Body and face paint becomes the norm and the real partying starts.

Only take enough cash with you to see you through the night, do NOT take your wallet. As pleasant as the atmosphere is, thieves do operate on the beaches so be vigilant. Always arrange a meeting spot with your friends as if you lose them, the sheer mass of people will stop you from ever finding them again without a pre-determined meeting point.

But most of all have fun, the full moon is set up to be one of the greatest nights out you'll ever experience, don't let a silly mistake ruin it!

Koh Phangan - Advice For Travellers

Being home to several large dance parties every month, Koh Phangan can be either a hedonist's heaven or a holiday hell, outlined below is some sensible advice for people visiting the island.

When attending any of the parties on the island you should always keep a few things in mind. Remember that this is not your home country, the law here protects the Thai people, as a 'farang' (westerner) you have significantly reduced rights. Take for example an auto accident, let's say you are driving your rented jeep up a steep hill, coming towards you is a sand truck, and it fails to brake and collides with your jeep. Clearly the fault of the truck driver yes? He was going far too fast down a steep hill, not your fault at all right? Wrong, in Thailand the law is simple, if a farang is involved in an auto accident with a Thai person then regardless of who did what to cause the accident it is your fault. Why is that? Simple logic applies, you are a farang, you should not be here, and if you were not here the accident would never have happened thus it is your fault. I joke not.

Always remember that the island of Koh Phangan relies upon the tourist trade as its main source of income. Not a problem in itself, where the problem starts is with the less than honest people who are just waiting to take advantage of you should you give them the opportunity. Each month there are dozens of new stories involving some stupid farang who got far too drunk on Haad Rin beach, fell asleep and lost everything they had in their pockets to one of the professional pick pockets who cruise the parties looking for likely prey. You would be amazed at how many party goers decide it is safer to carry their passport, credit cards and plane tickets in their pockets than leave them in a security box. That pretty Thai girl (who probably wasn't actually a girl) that just came up and gave you a kiss at a party, did her hand go anywhere near your pockets? It happens; in fact it happens every month to many people, keep your wits about you.

Drinking and driving, just don't do it. So you think you can drive when you have had a skin full? Ok fine, off you go on your scooter with no crash helmet or protective clothing. Even a low speed crash whilst wearing a pair of shorts and sandals is terribly painful. Take it from me, somebody who knows, only a few short weeks ago I launched my Honda CBR onto the beach at 2am after drinking far more than was safe. I didn't walk for two weeks and I consider myself lucky, people die here every year due to drink driving, many are injured each month and have to cut their holiday short.

Don't upset the locals. I don't mean the lady who is cooking your food or the guy who is pumping you gasoline. I mean the kind of locals who consider themselves 'mafia' and make a hugely successful living ripping off tourists. These are not nice people and this is not a movie, there are many suspicious deaths on the island every year. Although these people are wise enough to realise they cannot go too far as they depend on the tourists as much as anyone else, if you give them a reason then they will give you trouble. On the surface Koh Phangan appears to be a tranquil paradise island, in reality it is a small piece of valuable land that has more in common with the Wild West than a civilised city. Almost everything here is controlled by certain key families, including the police, tread carefully; the illusion of safety is just that, an illusion.

If you maintain your self control, don't take foolish risks and remember that you are not in your native country then you will have no problems upon Koh Phangan. If you push the envelope a little too much a world of hurt could be waiting for you. I don't want to make Koh Phangan appear to be unsafe, almost all of the stories I hear involve somebody doing something stupid, the problem is they are doing something stupid in a place that has no safety net. Remember that and take care when you are visiting the island.

Exotic Getaways Are Great For Any Occasion

When you want to find an exotic location for your next getaway, you want to choose a place that has everything you need. The best choice in this is an all-inclusive resort where you have amenities extraordinaire at your fingertips. One of the most popular exotic getaways in the world is a vacation on the island of Bora Bora. This is one of the secluded islands of French Polynesia with a famous lagoon. From June to November is the best time of year to book your getaway to this island which has some of the best beaches and dive sites in the world as well as a wealth of marine life.

If you want a location that is not overly populated, then Koh Samai in Thailand is an exotic location to choose. Here you will find many secluded beaches where you can be alone and soak up the rays on the white sand. The nightlife is pretty exciting and the area is quite close to Koh Phangan, where you can attend the full moon party and the dive site of Koh Tao is in close proximity. Although this is a year round destination, the best time of year to visit is during the cooler season from January to February.

Fuji is a getaway destination that has it all. The island boats a tropical climate and even in the rainy season the rain showers are only for a short period of time each day. You can take in numerous white sandy beaches, engage in snorkeling or diving, explore coral reefs and rainforests and experience the exotic culture of the island. Although you can visit this island at any time of the year, January and February are the months when a typhoon is likely to occur.

The southern end of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico is a top destination for a golfing, fishing or family getaway at Loa Cabos. This is one destination that has something to interest every member of the family. From January to March, you can see the whales frolicking in the waters off the coast. Playa Medano is the beach where most of the resorts and hotels are located, but you can also stay in a less crowded area when you choose Playa Palmilla. Here you have a fabulous view of San Jose bay. Take a pirate ship tour that passes by several beaches about which you will hear many pirate stories.

Myrtle beach in South Carolina is another location for a getaway that has something for every visitor. You just have to sample the seafood cuisine, whether it is a family vacation or you want a romantic candlelight dinner for two. If romance is the theme of your getaway, take a sunset cruise or simply stroll along the beach. There are many unique Myrtle Beach tours designed with families in mind, such as pirate tours where everyone dresses as a pirate. Theme parks and waterparks abound as do the sandy beaches where you can swim, build a sandcastle, play beach sports or simply lie back and relax.

Scenic, Wonderful and Unspoiled Koh Pha Ngan Thailand

Koh Phangan in Thailand can easily be considered one of the most beautiful island destinations in the world. Not only does it have the great tropical climate that sun worshipers love, but it is also relatively unspoiled and undeveloped, making it perfect for anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature.

The funny thing is that the most well known aspect of Koh Phangan is the famous Full Moon Party which attracts revelers from throughout the world to come to Phangan and party all night long. The Full Moon party is held, as you might guess from the name, on the night of the full moon each and every month and has been for 21 years now. My guess is that the party won't be ending anytime soon.

While it may be the Full Moon party that draws many to Koh Phangan, it is the beauty of the island that makes people stay and come back time and again. If you travel tot he north of the island you will find a laid back feeling in the villages and some of the best snorkeling and diving in all of Thailand from Haad Salad beach and the neighboring island of Koh Ma.

The interesting thing about this small island is that it is actually connected to Koh Phangan by a sandbar and it is possible to walk from one island to the next during the low tide. How cool is that? And it is definitely worth the trip as the clear waters around Koh Ma are loaded with marine life.

If diving and snorkeling aren't your thing you can always choose to simply chill out on one of the many beaches on Phangan. Since the island has seen very little development it is still possible to find quiet beaches framed by palm trees where the only accommodations are awesome little beach bungalows. What better way to connect with a tropical paradise?

It doesn't matter if you are looking for the wild raucousness of a party of the peaceful serene relaxation of a palm lined beach by crystal clear waters, Koh Phangan can provide it. If you love the tropics and island life I would be willing to bet that you will leave part of your heart on Phangan and you will return again and again to refresh and recharge from your normal stressful life.

Backpacking in Thailand - What You Can Get Out of It

Take a look at any list of the top travel destinations in the world, and you'll see Thailand right on top (or at least, close to it) - and for good reason. Whether you're a seasoned traveler, or a newbie to backpacking, Thailand has something good in store for you.

1. Smiles.

Over the years, Thailand has aptly earned the moniker: the Land of Smiles. The people of Thailand are known to be among the nicest, friendliest, and most helpful folks on Earth, and you're sure to be greeted with warm smiles and friendly banter wherever you go. If you're new to backpacking, Thailand is definitely the place to go because you can rely on help from the locals anytime, with a smile.

2. Sun.

Without a doubt, Thailand has among the most ideal climates in the world; hence, why visitors from the colder regions of the west visit the country in droves. Thailand enjoys sunshine all year round, even throughout the so-called rainy season. So do pack the right stuff while backpacking - Thailand gives you the opportunity to show some skin!

3. Sand and Sea.

For most people, beaches are a must in backpacking. Thailand is probably best known for its numerous fantastic white sand beaches and virtually untouched aquatic wildlife, so it's a match made in heaven!

Of course, the 'different strokes for different folks' adage apply. The many beaches of Thailand each has their own distinct personalities that cater to the varied preferences of their discerning visitors. For example, scuba divers and snorkelers looking to enjoy an unspoiled water world frequent Koh Tao and the Similan Islands. Ravers can't get enough of the full moon parties of Koh Phangan, or the regular beach parties at neighboring Koh Samui. The nature-tripper will have much to gush about in Krabi's Phi Phi Islands and Trat's Koh Chang. The pleasure-seeker will never want to leave Patong or Pattaya Beach. And if you just want to spend the day baking under the sun, well, take your pick and go visit one - or all!

4. Sex.

Possibly the main reason why most travelers (men, to be entirely accurate) frequent Thailand is the country's famous sex industry. In Bangkok alone, a farang (Western) man - and in some cases, woman - can indulge in forbidden pleasures by simply visiting areas like Patpong, Nana, and the infamous Soi Cowboy. Such pleasures can also be found in the go-go and coyote bars that litter Pattaya's famous Walking Street and Phuket's Patong Beach. Tastes ranging from the conventional to the slightly askew to the downright sleazy are sure to be satisfied in any of the sex areas that can be found in most of the country's tourist haunts. Whether you're into skinny, bowlegged chicks, or the more voluptuous pre and post-op trannies, Thailand has it all.

Of course, this is probably not the whole point of your backpacking. Thailand, however, has a way of luring unsuspecting travelers into its raw sexual energy, and this has become the downfall of many a hapless farang who end up with empty wallets (all thanks to seemingly angelic bargirls who need 'rescuing'), or worse, a plethora of undesirable diseases due to general carelessness. Know that by indulging in Thailand's most famous industry, you are treading in dangerous waters, so do tread carefully.

5. Shopping.

Without a doubt, Thailand offers excellent shopping, definitely one of the best in the world. Bangkok itself plays host to numerous shopping districts where one can get anything from designer labels to cheap knock-offs. Those with heftier wallets frequent the Ratchaprasong area and its upscale malls with their numerous designer boutiques. The more budget-conscious, however, can be found haggling their way through nearby Pratunam, the Lumphini Night Market, the Chatuchak Weekend Market, and Bo Bae, Asia's wholesale mecca.

Most of the time, shopping is practically unheard of while backpacking. Thailand, however, sells everything from clothes and accessories to the latest gadgets at incredibly cheap prices. Haggle like there's no tomorrow, why don't you? That's part of the fun!

Indeed, there's much to learn in backpacking. Thailand is an excellent teacher. No wonder newbies flock to the country by the thousands, and the veterans just keep on coming.

Holidaying in Ko Samui, Thailand

The Full Moon Party held at Koh Samui is the most unforgettable highlight of the trip to Thailand. Ko Samui has many hotels that line the seashore. Some of them are lovely bungalows, with verdant green lawns and a lovely pool. They give a remarkable view of the surroundings and with the cool sea breeze wafting around; the party mood just swells up. This sets the tempo for the party.

It is in this situation, a the Full Moon Party is held. All the participants are completely excited. It is the most bizarre and talked about party on the island. It is held on the full moon night each month, on the curved beach of Hat Rin in Koh Phangan. There are over 8000 people who take part in the revelries each month. This makes it the largest party in Thailand. Due to its popularity, you need to make your reservations quite before time to prevent missing out on the fun.

You have to go there long before evening. The view of circular yellow moon, mounting gradually over the sea and the white sandy beach generates a feeling of awe. The atmosphere here is surreal and innumerable lamps are lit all over the beach.

As the evening goes by, the level of revelry reaches the higher level. Music, dancing, jugglers, fire-eaters and pyrotechnics display increase the mood of the party. All throughout the night, people dance, eat and are totally relaxed. It resembles a paradise and no participant ever wants it to end for ever. So if you ever happen to be in Samui during this time, do ensure not to give this party a miss.

Great Islands to Party Around the World

Everyone likes a good party. If you are a young traveler or just someone keen on having a good time while relaxing in the sun, then finding the right party island will be important to you. There are many islands in the world and all of them are beautiful, however, not all of them offer the party you may be looking for.

One of the best places to find party islands is in Greece. Visitors flock here for its amazing weather, beautiful beaches, warm waters, and great parties. Two of the best places to party are Ios and Corfu. Corfu is on the west coast of Greece. There are regular beach parties outside of the Atlantis nightclub and party goers stay at the infamous Pink Palace. During the day, people soak up the beautiful Mediterranean sun.

Ios has a lot of young tourists looking for one thing: parties. Ios is not only a party island but it is also beautiful and filled with culture (Homer was from here!). The island has a lot of great beaches with clear blue water. At night, everyone comes out for some great seafood and Greek dining before spending the evening doing body shots of each other and waking up on the beach. Most party goers end up staying out until sun rise and sleep it off while getting a tan during the day. This is an island for the night owl.

For those looking to get out of the Mediterranean, you can head over to Southeast Asia and the islands of Bali and Ko Phangan. Bali is one of the most popular destinations in the world. Located in Indonesia, this huge island has a bit of everything. And those looking for a party will find it on Kuta beach. Besides great surfing, this spot is known for its beach parties and excessive nightlife. Here the tourists get loud, get down, and get crazy. It's a cheap destination making it really popular among backpackers, Aussies, and Kiwis. After you burnt yourself out at night, treat yourself to a nice massage during the day.

Bali might be famous worldwide but Ko Phangan is the world's premiere party destination. This island is well known to all travelers. It hosts the famous Full Moon Party every month, when 20,000 or more people descend on Haat Rin beach to consume large quantities of alcohol and dance until dawn. All the partying happens on Haat Rin beach and every night, the beach fills up with crowds of revelers looking to just have a good time. There is always an excuse to party, whether it is a Full Moon, Half Moon, or Black Moon party. After a few of the islands famous alcohol buckets, you won't care what they call the party.

In the South Pacific, Fiji is well known to be a center of parties and activities. The most famous island group there is the Yasawa and that sees a lot of young backpackers who only have fun and sun on their mind. Here cheap bungalows, nightly BBQs, and cheap alcohol as well as beautiful beaches and great diving. It also helps that Fiji is a major stop on all RTW airline tickets.

No matter where you are or want to go in the world, there is an island with your name on it. You'll find what you are looking for and will be partying with sun soaked people from around the world in no time.

Travelling to Koh Phangan - What Are the Options?

So you have landed in Bangkok, probably spent a couple of days enjoying the crazy place and are now ready to head out to the islands? Great, but just how do you get there? Well you could consult your guide book, it will tell you how, but it won't give you a very good idea of which is the best option. I will try to do that here.

Train and boat

There are several trains each day travelling south from Bangkok to Surat Thani. It takes around 9 hours to complete the train journey, you must then get a coach from the station (don't worry they will be waiting for you to get off the train, not hard to find one) to pier in Donsak. From there you take a boat, approximately a 4 hour trip depending on the weather. Possibly the best way to do this journey is to take the overnight sleeper train, this gets you to Surat Thani early the next morning, you will arrive on Koh Phangan sometime in the afternoon. Be warned, the aircon is very cold should you take a 1st or 2nd class ticket, consider taking 3rd class, fan only, you really don't need aircon at 2am.

Bus

Taking a bus is the cheapest option; it is also the least comfortable. So called 'VIP' buses can be booked from most travel agents in Bangkok. The journey takes up to 19 hours, a long time to be trapped on a slow moving vehicle. I only recommend this option if you are on the kind of budget where you need to watch every penny.

Flying

Unfortunately, Bangkok Airways still maintain a monopoly over flights to Koh Samui airport. This makes the Bangkok-Samui route the most expensive in Thailand. If you choose to fly during the day you will be looking at a fee of around 4,000 Baht. There are two promotional flights each day, one at 6am the other at 10pm, and these can be booked for 2,000 Baht, but book well in advance as they fill up fast. Once on Koh Samui just ask a taxi driver to take you to the pier for the next boat leaving to Koh Phangan, it's a 20 minute crossing.

Once you arrive upon Koh Phangan you will be swamped by friendly taxi drivers asking you where you want to go, don't be alarmed they are just trying to make a living and they really are your only option for public travel on the island. Renting a scooter is the best way to get around.

Life Is a Beach on Chaweng Beach

If you've heard the phrase 'life's a beach' then it couldn't fit anywhere more than Chaweng Beach on the Thai island of Koh Samui. A holiday here stirs up a mood of total delight and the phrase 'life's a beach' is perfect.

Chaweng Beach extends an impressive seven magnificent miles and is located in the north eastern part of Koh Samui. The island's most fashionable tourist quarter means that it is also the most developed and you'll find everything needed for a holiday in the sultry sun - water sports, a broad range of dining opportunities and a lively night scene.

It's very easy to find peace and tranquility here too, away from the busy bars, fast food eateries and souvenir shops you'll discover places of calm without the blare of music and whine of jetski's. Hotels and resorts line the beach but at the north and south ends it's much quieter. South of Chaweng Beach is little Chaweng with just a few hotels and restaurants so if you want somewhere away from the crowded areas then head here.

Beach Road is the main part of Chaweng and the location of most of the popular bars, clubs, restaurants, and shops. During the day the heat gives the area a sleepy feel however as soon as the sun goes down it's transformation into a gratification zone is like magic. Have a coffee at Starbucks or eat at a simple roadside food stall, take a walk around the streets and soak up the buzz, or go clubbing - the choices are limitless.

Shopping for souvenirs is also good on the Beach Road and you can find t-shirts, inexpensive jewellery and other bits and pieces such as soap carvings, hippy-style bags, shoes and hats. Tailors from the sub-continent hustle for trade and offer to make you a suit in a day.

Returning to the beach the swimming is ideal as the water is warm and calm, sunbathe on a sun lounger and sample fresh coconut juice, the vendors will hew them open there and then, simply add a straw and let the sweetness quench your thirst.

Also on the beach are masseuse offering the ultimate relaxation with oil and foot massages, they walk the beach offering their services either under the shaded trees or right there on your sunlounger, always agree a price beforehand.

There are hawkers selling all sorts of goods and services on the beach, from ice cream and a cold beer, hair braiding and henna tattoos, there's no need to move from your chair as they'll come to you.

For the more energetic amongst you then why not have a go at jet-skiing, take a banana boat ride, or go water skiing, windsurfing or parasailing. Or the more ambitious might like to attend diving school and learn scuba from qualified instructors, or try your hand at Thai boxing if you have the courage.

The scope of Koh Samui hotels in Chaweng is broad offering everything from basic beachside huts to luxurious 5 star resorts, these days boutique hotels are a popular choice for their unique style of interior decoration and quality of personal service, and spa resorts which offer an array of spa and beauty packages combined with sumptuous lodgings.

Some mourn the changes in Chaweng from the original sleepy cove to the present day busy holiday-maker town, however the fact remains that tourists need facilities and Samui can provide these. There is everything here you could possibly want for a great holiday and the island is quick and convenient to reach by ferry or airplane.

Discover Thailand

When you think of Thailand, most people will think of Phuket with white sands, Bangkok with loads of shopping or Koh Phangan's well known beach full moon party. We will discover Thailand and other better held secrets. Phuket today is different than Phuket ten to fifteen yrs ago, the amount of holidaymakers have destroyed what once used to be a magnificent tropical Island, a lot vendors are only there to gain a fast baht and scams are happening to tourists on a regular basis. Phuket is quickly losing is glamor as a holiday heaven.

Nowadays there is a lot better Islands South of Phuket close to Trang which is very inexpensive compared to Phuket, scams are no where to be found and you can relax on a beautiful beach without getting asked to ride a jet ski or anything else. Trang is growing fast as a popular tourist destination with its crystal clear waters, outstanding diving sites and simply just better all round experience. I know a lot of people who have traveled in Trang and no one person did not have a great time, so I can assure you that it is one of if not the best place to go in southern Thailand.

Hua Hin is well know for expats and Thai's but for some reason has been left out of a lot tour guides and tour agencies. Hua Hin is only a few hours drive from Bangkok, the air is clean, the streets are clean and so are the beaches. Hua Hin beach have white sands and the water are absolute crystal clear and is never packed with people. It is like the forgotten beach of Thailand. The nightlife does not have much but Hia HIn is great if you need to relax on a beautiful beach.

Bangkok will always be the best place to shop in Thailand but Chiang Mai a close second, Chiang Mai is in Northern Thailand and the shopping experience is a little different then Bangkok. Chiang Mai have slightly different handiwork's and most of the handiwork's are much better quality than Bangkok. With the Hill tribes in Chiang Mai you can also hike the mountains and spend a few nights with them. Chiang Mai has a lot of nature and while it might be the second biggest city in Thailand, it has so much nature surrounding it that a 30 min drive can take you close to nature.

Their is so much more to discover in Thailand and over the next few weeks I will write more articles about a few more places.

Full Moon Party - Koh Phangan

The full moon party upon Koh Phangan is a very special event. There are few places in this world where you can live out your desert island dreams of palm trees and white sand beaches and still have a blinding night out at a rocking party every month, Koh Phangan is one of them. The town of Had Rin is a vibrant mix of friendly Southern Thai hospitality and the island's unique party culture, creating a place and vibe that could only be found at the origin of this world famous party.

The Full Moon Party is held at Haad Rin Nok, so the many restaurants, pubs and bars in Haad Rin are decorated to attract tourists. At the party, top-name DJs provide many genre of music, like Hip Hop, Dance, R&B, Reggae and lots more. In addition, any number of other performers may join the Party throughout the evening; fire blowers and dancers, face painters and impromptu firework displays among them.

In high season, there are over ten thousand people joining this party, but there are rooms to accommodate them scattered all over Koh Phangan, if you want to stay in Haad Rin you should book a room at least one week before the party. It is possible to stay on Koh Samui and get the ferry over for the party and back again early the next morning.

Police are cracking down on the drug scene at full moon parties, undercover police attend the party to try to catch people dealing or taking drugs. Large fines are the consequence faced by anyone caught. This is a significant change from the early days of the Full Moon Party when drug taking was actively encouraged upon Koh Phangan.

With the global notoriety that the Full moon party has gained as being one of the biggest and best beach bashes in the world, Koh Phangan gets more than its fair share of hedonists gracing its shores. Few know that the first Full Moon Party actually started as a going away bash for a friend of the owner of Paradise Bungalows on Haad Rin beach, which just happened to be at full moon. Each year the scene on Koh Phangan grows with the ever-increasing number of party faithful that return, bringing their friends and spreading the vibe.

Koh Samui, Thailand - The Best Destination

Koh Samui is easily accessible from Bangkok, which is Thailand's chief transport center through plane or bus / ferry arrangement. If you opt to travel by road, then you have to go to Surat thani Town, or Don Sak or Chumporn ferry ports, in order to enter the island.

Despite all the latest developments being carried on, the island has still managed to retain its green spots and exported about 70 tons of coconuts a month, primarily to Bangkok. Initially it was a backpacker destination during the initial 80s. But today Samui has something for everyone, beach bungalow, high tech villa, speed garage. You can have a memorable spring holiday in elegant bars and venues, with one being made totally from ice, or a relaxed family holiday interspersed with yoga activities. This has been made possible due to Samui's size and its infinite bays.

If you are planning to rent a house, you can save yourself a lot of money if you stay there for over a month. You can hire any type of house from $80-$8000 per month. Most of them are fitted with air conditioning, furniture or a kitchen. Large Retailers such as Makro(TM), BigC(TM) or TESCO(TM) can be the source of your household shopping.

Traveling within the island is quite simple as frequent bus and cab services link all leading towns and beaches. Private air conditioned and metered cabs can be rented at a slightly more rate. For solo travelers a motorbike cab can be the cheapest mode of transport.

Samui has plenty of recreational activities. Mountain trails, waterfalls or trips to the Ang Thong National Marine Park for those who love nature, Golf & Shooting Ranches, Water parks and Go karts for the holiday lovers, Fine Dining Restaurants, Tennis Tournaments and sailing cruises for well-off. Many western run diving schools provide many types of water sports. Taking a tour around the island will throw up some interesting activities like football golf or guppy fishing.

Speedboat trips to the world famous Full Moon Party held on the sister island of Koh Phangan can be easily booked at each travel agency.

Koh Samui lies in the Surt thani region. It is one of 15 regions in Thailand where wearing a helmet while running a motorcycle is necessary. The legal penalty for offenders ranges from 300 to 500 Thai Baht (7-12$). So if you are an inexperienced motorcycle driver, then don't attempt to learn it at Koh Samui. There are lots of hotels in Samui, but Park Samui Hotel is the best.
